This past year I learned about a company called Root Cosmetics based in Waverly, Iowa. As an Iowa girl, I try to buy from Iowa. If there is a company that appeals to me in Iowa you will be the first to hear it! Founded in 2013 in Waverly, Iowa, Root started in the founder’s kitchen. Roots products are vegan and gluten-free and they are made without harsh toxins or artificial dyes. Their products are made for all skin types while only using natural ingredients without fillers. Here is my Root Cosmetics Review.
All products were purchased by me so all opinions are my own. So if I am raving about these products you know that I actually love them!
Root Cosmetics Review
I am always looking for natural makeup brands that perform the way well-known brands perform and with Root Cosmetics, I found a winner. Natural makeup has been on my radar for a while now and I am happy I found a company so close to home. Shopping small business is the way to go. They care about their customer and producing a great product! Root also has skin care, makeup brushes, hair care, home care and men’s products! Check out their website here.
Pearl Powder Mineral Foundation 4.5 grams
This might just be the BEST foundation I have ever used! I have dry skin that flakes and are hard to get to look lively! This foundation has had me from hello…I love the way it sinks into the skin! It truly looks like my skin but better! I am sure that my oily skin gals will have no problem using this foundation either! It is lightweight and feels like you are not wearing anything. They also have shades that are cool, neutral, warm, and golden and range from light to dark. I wear G3.5
There are different ways to apply this depending on how much coverage you desire. For light to medium coverage apply with their Pro Flat Top Kabuki. This is the way that I apply the foundation on a day to day basis. To achieve medium to full coverage, you can apply the foundation with their damp Pretty Blender. If you are someone who prefers liquid foundations, you can mix some of the powder with a little water and apply with your fingers or you Pretty Blender which make it a full coverage foundation. I have tried all of these techniques and my favorite is to either apply with the Pro Flat Top Kabuki or to apply as a liquid.
The foundation cost 18 dollars by its self or 52 dollars if you buy the Pretty Kit which comes with the Pearl Powder Mineral Foundation, Original Bronze Mineral Powder, Mineral Powder, Setting Silk, Root #64 Fluffy Flat Kabuki Brush, and the Pretty Blender.
Titanium Dioxide*, Mica, Zinc Oxide*, Iron Oxides (yellow & brown) *natural SPF (the more foundation you apply the more sun protection)
Original Bronze Powder 4.5 grams
I am picky about bronzers! I don’t want them to be too warm or too cool. This is a bronzer that leans neutral with a hint of warmth. I like how natural looking it is! The bronzer doesn’t look like I threw dirt on my face or make me look orange! Yes, I have run into bronzers with both of those problems. The key to this bronzer is to apply before the Setting Silk which helps sink it into the skin for a perfectly natural look.
Tap a TINY amount(this stuff is pigmented) of bronzer into the lid. Swirl your Flat Top Kabuki and tap off the excess. Start with your cheekbones and move to your hairline and then to your jaw line. Most say imagine a 3 on your face to “contour” where the sun hits and where the shadows fall on your face. I need bronzer to liven my face…so I don’t look like a ghost.
The Original Bronze Powder is 12 dollars on its own or it is included in the Pretty Kit for 52 dollars.
Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide, Mica, Zinc Oxide
Setting Silk 4.5 grams
This is the product that puts all other setting powders to shame! Setting Silk contains organic aloe powder which soothes the skin. My favorite part of this product is that it makes your face and make look smoother and flawless! I love how this product feels. It does not feel drying or heavy and makes my skin look a lot better than it is.
Tap the Setting Silk into your lid. Swirl with Kabuki Brush & tap off excess powder. Apply in a circular motion over your Pearl Powder Mineral Foundation, bronze, blush or alone for subtle coverage. You can apply the setting silk before your foundation to minimize pores. You can even apply this over a lip color to mattify it and to make it longer wearing!
The Setting Silk costs 16 dollars on its own or it is included in the Pretty Kit for 52 dollars
Mica, Organic Aloe Vera Powder
Hello Pretty Under Eye Brightener .4 ounces
Are you ready to brighten those under eyes? This product is great at that! That must be how it got its name. I love this as a natural brightener. It won’t conceal as much as a concealer does but for an everyday basis, this product works for me. I will still need to invest in a concealer though to help hide dark circles on sleepless nights.
Apply half of a pump of Hello Pretty Under Eye Brightener with your ring finger in a triangle shape underneath your eyes. Apply before your foundation and finish with Pearl Powder Foundation. The more you blend this product the more natural and brighter this product gets. You can also use your Pretty Blender to blend this product in!
Hello Pretty Under Eye Brightener cost 18 dollars.
Organic Aloe Juice, Organic Jojoba Oil, Titanium Dioxide, Emulsifying Wax, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Phenoxyethanol, Iron Oxide, Mica, Zinc Oxide, Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE), Palm Stearic Acid, Meadowfoam Oil, Carrot Oil, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Rosemary Extract, Neem Oil, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citric Acid
Sunniest Blushing Bronze 3.5 grams
This blush is gorgeous. Sunniest is a warm and peachy blushing bronze and is the perfect color to warm the skin. It has a bit of shimmer to make the skin glow. Root’s blushes are very pigmented so a little goes a long way!
Apply Blushing Bronze to the apples of your cheeks blending upward towards your hairline. Start with less because you can always add more. If you’ve added too much simply apply Setting Silk over top to tone down the color. You can also add this on top of your bronzer for a more dimension.
Sunniest Blushing Bronze costs 14 dollars.
Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Iron Oxides, Zinc Oxide
White Gold Illuminator 3.5 grams
Have you ever tried The Balms Mary Lou Manizer? Well if you love that I have the natural alternative for you! I’m not going to lie, when I first opened this the glitter looked intense and too unnatural. But after trying this and blending it out with a blush it looked very natural. Like a glow from within. I like to use this as an eyeshadow too!
Apply this to the tops of your cheekbones, brow bone, nose, and upper lip.
The White Gold Illuminator costs 14 dollars
Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Iron Oxide & Zinc Oxide
Natural Brow Powder 2.5 grams
Not going to lie, this product took some getting used too. It is a very natural looking brow powder. I am used to using the Anastasia Brow Wiz or Brow Pomade which is not all that natural looking compared to this. Your brows will not be as bold looking but you also will not have sharpie brows which for me is a plus. Especially now that I have decided to go the natural route with makeup.
Using an angled brush apply powder with short strokes in the direction of the hair growth. You can also dip your brush in water to intensify the look. Guess what? You can also use these brow powders as an eyeshadow so there is a 2 for 1 with this one too.
Brow powder cost 12 dollars and I also got a small compact to keep this in which costs 8 dollars.
Organic Rice Powder, Mica, Boron Nitrate, Organic Jojoba Seed Oil, Zinc Stearate, Panthenol, Organic Oregano Leaf Extract, Organic Thyme Extract, Organic Cinnamon Bark Extract, Organic Rosemary Leaf Extract, Organic Lavender Flower Extract, Organic Goldenseal Root Extract • May Contain: Titanium Dioxide & Iron Oxides
100% Lash Natural & Organic Mascara .25 ounces
Root 100% Mascara is 100 percent natural with lash conditioning ingredients. This product is not 100% for me. I love the way it looks and how black it is but I am having a problem with smudging. I am trying to figure out how to fix this problem but I haven’t completely figured this out yet. If you have any suggestions leave them in the comments below because I want to love this product but so far I am stuck in like.
Root 100% Lash Mascara cost 14 dollars.
Water, Organic Chamomile Hydrosol, Carnauba Wax, Mica, Organic Coffee Powder, Organic Rice Powder, Organic Sunflower Seed Oil, Organic Corn Starch, Lecithin, Vitamin E, Oregano Leaf Extract, Thyme Extract, Cinnamon Bark Extract, Rosemary Flower Extract, Goldenseal Root Extract, Organic Lemon Peel Extract, Organic Grapefruit Seed Extract, Vanilla Planifolia, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides
Paradise Pretty Balm 3 grams
Root describes this as a mixture of a lip balm, lip gloss, and lipstick. I would have to agree. It is a moisturizing lip color that looks natural and feels weightless. Paradise is a peach color with a glossy finish.
Organic Olive Oil, Candelilla Wax, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Palm Oil, Organic Jojoba Seed Oil, Rosehip Fruit Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Rosemary Leaf Extract, Neem Seed Oil, Stevia Leaf Extract (May contain sodium bicarbonate and/or citric acid as pH adjusters) • May contain the following coloring pigments: Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Tin Oxide
Looking for a cheaper version of the Beauty Blender? Look no further! This sponge is perfect for an airbrushed finish to your makeup. It is the best at blending your makeup into the skin. Make sure that you soak the Pretty Blender and then squeeze out excess water.
Root Fluffy Kabuki Brush
So far I am loving what this brand has to offer. I am excited to check out their home care and skin care. If you know any other natural makeup and skin care brands worth checking out let me know in the comments below.
