I may or may not have an obsession with donuts…Ok, I have a major obsession. But who doesn’t love a good donut! For Valentine’s day this year, I have decided to give all of my friends and family a decorated donut sugar cookies. To add to the cookie I made free printable donut valentines.
This sugar cookie recipe is called the “Miracle” Sugar cookie and lives up to the name. It starts off like most sugar cookie recipe but is baked at 425 degrees for only 5 minutes. They are soft and AMAZING! We have been using this recipe for over a decade and it has never failed us. The cookies hold their shape and don’t spread. Just don’t forget to set a timer… I may have forgotten too and overbaked a dozen or two.
I flour our countertop and roll the dough to a 1/4 inch thickness. Then I use a 3 inch round cutter and a 1 inch round cutter for the hole. I like to use a thin metal turner to place the cookies on to the pan.
The royal icing recipe that I use is simple. I use pasteurized egg whites instead of meringue powder. I do not love the taste of meringue powder. Egg whites give the royal icing a better base flavor and adding vanilla makes the icing taste AMAZING! The icing takes around 10 minutes to make and will dry down to a matte finish.
To decorate these cookies I added pink food coloring to the frosting and then I added water. I add enough water to make the frosting thin enough that when I run a spoon through the frosting falls back into place after 20 seconds. Then I get my piping bag ready with a Wilton #3 tip. I hate outlining and flooding cookies so I choose not to. I start in the middle and I continue to circle these cookies until I am where I want to be. When I decorate other cookies I will outline so that I know where to stop. The last step is to top with sprinkles and let dry!
Decorating cookies is a lot easier than you think It is truly learning to find a way to decorate that feels comfortable to you. Learn to pipe straight lines and feel confident using a piping bag. Everyone has their own quirks when it comes to decorating so you just have to find yours.
The recipe will be at the bottom of this post.
